✿ AFFIRMATION CARDS: BLACK JOY! EDITION ✿

in my second year of uni, i started a project called ‘black joy!’, and the aim of this was to create art and products that focus on black joy and empowerment - essentially looking at all the amazing and wonderful things about black people and black culture, rather than constantly thinking about the hardships we endure - not because it’s not important to highlight the difficult times, but because it’s easy to forget the positives.

as black people, there are unique struggles we have growing up whether that’s due to environment, culture, upbringing or something else. these can result in a lot of harmful thinking that can be dificult to unlearn.

enter: affirmation cards. i’ve always wanted to make affirmation cards, especially because i rely on affirmations so heavily. so, i decided to use this opportunity to make them with the ‘black joy!’ theme in mind, and try to help change the sad thoughts we may have about ourselves into positive ones.

i illustrated, printed and cut the cards and packaging from home, which allowed me to have a lot of creative freedom to experiment.
i wanted to draw on the reverse side of the affirmation cards, so that both sides could be used depending on whether you wanted encouragement or something to brighten up your desk.

eventually i decided to speak to different inspiring people in the uk and illustrate them instead. i asked about what they love about what they do, and inspires them. i thought about having nfc chips in the cards that could be scanned, so people could read more, but i wasn’t able to get this done. instead, you can scroll down and click each picture to learn more about each person!

this was a really amazing project to work on, and helped me learn a lot about production and prototyping. i also realised how much it can pay off when you just do things. i went out of my comfort zone to reach out to a lot of people, but the conversations i had were really heartwarming and encouraged me a lot!
